English Language Education Department feels like a second chance for me. The first thing that crosses my mind about this Department is that it aligns with my interest in learning about English. I always enjoy learning English with a whoever teacher or whatever method they use. Else, I heard that when you're studying English, the exposure to the job is really numerous. Being in this Department really feels like a door to many opportunities. The possibilities in all fields of work are what I'm aiming for when I fixed my choice to be in ELESP.
Two things over many other reasons that really captured my interest and made me enjoy my journey in ELESP are subjects and lecturers. Subjects are being taught mostly in project-based learning. It really stimulates growth, teamwork and creativity. I found it quite challenging, yet being able to accomplish it really feels worth it. The lecturers are very inspiring. They always do more than teach. They taught us about values, work ethic, and attitude, but most importantly, they always encouraged us to broaden our experience. They made us believe that we can explore the world if we know how to seize all the possible ways to pursue our careers and dreams.
I would sum up my experience of being in ELESP as a life-changing milestone. Not only does ELESP give the exact environment of great academics, I believe that ELESP will always be the start of my growth, home to dedicated and compassionate educators, and surely a place full of opportunities. This is where support is also encouraged. Values of doing science and making an impact on the community are the core of my activities.
During my time studying in the Department, I learned a lot. Numerous soft skills are the main takeaways. I remember not knowing about a single thing about handling a specific project-based event called CCU World Cultural Concert. I have never been on an event committee before, nor do I know how to accomplish it. But somehow, in ELESP, we should make it work as a class team because it is a part of the final term of the Cross-Cultural Understanding (CCU) subject. And surprisingly, with all the possible ways, we finally did it. That alone taught me about growth mindset, public speaking, and project organizing. CCU is just one of the subjects that the Department offers. Way more events and programs are open every year in ELESP. I could say the exposure to sharpen soft skills from learn-by-doing experience is our life here in ELESP.
In high school, I never really got in my mind other than being an educator as my dream job. But about four years in ELESP really opened my mind to endless possibilities. Being in ELESP made me realize that there are numerous jobs in this rapid-changing world. As long as you match the skills requirements in media, start-ups, entrepreneurship, government, corporate, and NGOs. Thus, I started to shift my dream job and what I wanted to do later in life. It's about self-development and career. I plan on looking for fully funded youth projects or abroad programs for self-development, and I want to make a greater impact on the community in Gorontalo.
Meanwhile, for my career, I aim to lead managerial-level start-ups or corporate, with few alternatives, like starting it by being a remote copywriter or graphic designer. If this plan doesn't work, I will pursue higher study and (if possible) gladly teach as a lecturer.
